The Black Crowes have flooded the NYC area with many appearances in last six months at The Capitol Theatre and Terminal 5.
I was lucky (and plan-full) enough to see both an electric (see “Black Crowes + Capitol Theatre = Rock and Roll Hootchie Coo”) and an acoustic show at the great Capitol Theatre Tuesday night (10.22.13).
Busting out of the gate already warmed up with a heartfelt Stones cover on “Let It Bleed”…
The Black Crowes took the liberty of by-passing the “greatest hits” and performing songs that their acoustic ensemble – complete with Sir Jackie Greene on lead guitar and guests Sam Bush on mandolin and Larry Campbell on pedal steel et al.- could have great fun with.
Chris Robinson had a big bold sound, almost like his smokey “lunch lady” tone disappeared.
Jackie Greene’s banjo work was unique and a pleasure to watch. He continues to impress with his laid back versatile style.
Sam Bush (The Father of Jam Band Mandolin) was high energy on many tunes and helped propel the atmosphere on stage between bandmates to an “after school garage band party.”
There was an extreme comfort the band had that was great to see. I’m sure it had something to do with the sold-out audience and great Capitol Theatre sound system.
Here is the set list. Lots of unusual picks here… cover of Ry Cooder’s “Boomer’s Song” as the last encore and The Pink Floyd stuff were big fun for this bird.
“Quinn The Eskimo” had everyone singing too, which is always fun (as long as its not on the record.)
Here is a nice story from Jambands.com on the show.
I was at the show with a very large and diverse group of people…all of whom swayed and smiled, fist-bumped and high-fived with each other as the band played on.
What a great night to flap one’s wings. Thanks to my New Haven crew for making the trip.
Peace.
