Amidst controversy surrounding the “must wear costume or formal attire” comment on their tickets for the recent Reflektor tour…the Montreal, CANADA-born Arcade Fire stormed the Webster Bank Arena stage in Bridgeport, CT on March 18, 2014 with 100 perfect confidence that the legions of 20 and 30 year old fans would partake in the neo-hipster party they were hosting.  Which (BTW) include a pre-show dance circle mid-floor that invite two fans at a time to funk out their favorite moves.

Here is a detailed story on the Pop Matters blog by Sachyn Mital (whom I stole these pictures from).

Donned with oversized papermache heads, skinny tie/suit combo and/or florescent gowns, the Arcade Fire fans loved every minute of the show by one of America’s most popular modern rock bands today.

It reminded me of the glitz show put on by Father John Misty and Flaming Lips at Terminal 5 that I saw last year.

Here are some YouTube clips from the show

The connection between band and fan was deep and soulful.  The second stage mid floor back and forth between lead singer husband and wife tandem (Rin Butler and Regine Cassagne) was very unique and cool…as well as the DJ dressed in an light bulb covered body suit.

From our press box perch, I enjoyed watching the audience participation and raw energy emulate from the sea of bopping bodies.

In many ways (on a smaller scale) it reminded me so much of Phish at MSG during the NYE run…especially when the tens of thousands of glitter strands were released from the arena roof (see pic above).

Although I entered with an open mind and unplugged ears, I didn’t get excited by the music.  BUT, that didn’t matter.  Sometimes its great to see how music that doesn’t resonate with you rings so true for others.

Its hard not to respect the relationship the Arcade Fire has with its fans and applaud them for making it to Bridgeport (which needs more rock shows like Neil Young and Wilco/My Morning Jacket/Dylan to take center stage).

Although the wind didn’t get under my sail, I was giddy to see so many flapping their wings.

BTW…the sound was much better then in the past and the Webster Bank crew is very welcoming and fun.  Thanks again A. Rimmer for allowing me to bring my crew behind the curtain.

Peace.
