In April, Widespread Panic will play the newly renovated ($95M worth of renovations to be exact) Kings Theatre on Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn. Like many of these old left to die theaters in the NYC area, 86 years ago the Kings Theatre was the center of the community. On Feb 3, Diana Ross will open the theatre (Kings Theatre website).
There are a dozen or so of these projects in the area. Some will make it and so will become money-pits and close. Nathanial Adams at New York Times provided an overview of this trend and shared the back story on Kings and others… click here for the full article.
The pictures of these renovated theaters are spectacular!
BUT, what the Capital Theatre in Port Chester, NY has proved… great sound and a killer vibe is what keeps bringing the bands and crowds back again and again.
In comparison, I saw Widespread Panic and Allman Brothers (two separate nights) years ago at Harlem’s Palace Theatre. The sound was terrible, and I never returned… nor did the bands.
Let’s hope they got the sound right. Great lighting and a tolerant security crew can’t hurt either.
With my buddy Andrew G. in change of the renovations, I am sure they will hit the mark.
