With the distinct sound of seaplanes taking off outside my window on Vancouver Harbor  I started to hum the theme from “Northern Exposure“… the early Nineties oddball sitcom set in the Alaskan outpost known as Cicley featuring the wonderful seaplane pilot Maggy O’Connell (played by Janine Turner). Like in “Fantasy Island” a decade earlier when Tattoo opened each show with his hallmark cries of “Za Plane, Za Plane”, the sounds of Northern Exposure transport viewers to a faraway place.

Northern Exposure was one of those shows that used music in a powerful way to create a deeper relationship with their audience’s.

Having the wacky radio dj (Chris in the Morning on KBHR 57 AM played by John Sorbet) is a genius idea to create a totem for music and culture in the show each of its six seasons at 110 episodes.

When I first got my hands on the North Exposure soundtrack CD in 1992, I was able to extend that cray cray the bohemian Alaskan world into mine. (Hence the pic below which hangs in my kitchen now.)

It is here I met Daniel Lanois before he turned around Dylan’s career. His listed to his song “Jolie Louise” many times (click here) and was able to transport myself in the Brick for a few pops and some jukebox.

Click here to view him in early 90s playing this song on TV.

Getting back to my trip to Vancouver (yes, I ramble, especially when it involves music… I know), things have come full circle as the seaplane hm moved me to see Chris in The Morning, Maggie, and the Cicely gang again

Peace. FYW (Flap Your Wings)
