I recently made a comment to a friend when talking about rock concerts I was looking forward to see in the near future (yes that is a mouthful)… I said, “frankly, I’ve seen it all, and that my attention has turned to very discrete bands in great venues.”
When Neil Young with Lukas Nelson’s Promise of The Real announced semi-secret last minute shows at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY, my antenna went up and despite real world antics trying to sabotage my night, I was front row (actually stage left near the Joe Bavaro gang) with bells on.
Here is a link to setlist.
Headlines from my pocket sized show notes field book…
1) Neil sings the old acoustic anthems just as well as ever. I enjoyed “Tell Me Why” the most.

2) Neil’s current stage theme/vibe (and Neil has many) is “Ragged Glory” meets “Harvest”. At 72 years old, the man is Iron Man. He can still grind out guitar grunge and sing the high notes on his hits.
3) My favorite song of the night way “Fuckin’ Up”… he and the band lost themselves in the jam. This one song was worth the price of admission. The Cap is a very small venue for electric Neil. The ability to be intimate with the Neil stage line is rare.
5) My other favorite song of the night was the swampy rendition of “Words”… This was vintage electric Neil for me tonight.
4) An 8:30 pm start and two hour non-stop show covering 15 songs was a perfect amount of time. If I had any gripe, it would be Cortez the Killer was a bit flat and mellow.

By the way watching Neil play organ front and center, is always a treat. Tonight was no different…
5) Neil was very playful and whimsical with the band and audience.
He was having fun, and so were we.
: )
