The Beatles are everywhere…

Peter Bettinger’s “A Dutch Day’s Night Watch” in Rijks Museum, Amsterdam

At first I was reluctant to venture to the Nanuet, NY theatre to see the new movie “Yesterday”, in which a singer-songwriter down on his luck suddenly becomes the only person to know who the Beatles are. He uses the McCartney-Lennon catalog to become a star… the movie concept and poster didn’t excite me, but, at the urging of my daughters, I went with settled in with a large popcorn and an open mind.

GOOD NEWS: I was pleasantly surprised that I really enjoyed the movie… the screenplay, acting and singing were very entertaining and brought more than a few smiles to my face. Director Danny Boyle takes a unique sideways approach to present the impact the Beatles songs had on America. Kudos to him, and the lead character (Jack Malik) for making this tale spin smoothly.

The Ed Sheeran cameo scenes and the songwriting playoff he has with Jack Malik were a nice touch and kept the story fresh.

In the end “Yesterday” is a light-hearted flick about how music (in this case the Beatles) changes the world and makes people happy. Great for a rainy evening this fall when it hits Netflix.
