Looking down from the edge of the left center balcony, I watched Gregg Allman gear it up one more time in his coffin-like keyboard console area like an antique marionette that still has that special shine.  As G. Allman was belting out Wasted Words (one of my personal favorites from my jean jacket days) with the vim and vigor of a man whose body has aged far less than his.

I smiled.

Looking down from the edge of the left center balcony, I watched Derek Trucks continue his slow path up that big, long guitar legend hill.  His poise and talents impressed all.  I am looking forward to watching this 28 year gun slinger push that big heavy rock up the hill….one turn at a time.  One day he’ll take the Allman Bros. Band baton over from Warren.

I wiggled and swayed.

Looking down from the edge of the left center balcony, I admired the very tasteful redesign of The Beacon Theatre…a place the Allman’s will evermore be connected with.

I watched Warren Haynes, the hardest and most talented working man in rock and roll, put on his Allman Brothers Band hat and dazzle us all with his power and timing.  Mule, The Dead, the Allman…he is the king of the hill, but takes a humble and subservient second fiddle when EC, the man who was know by a whole generation as “God”, steps up for his turn to lay down licks.  Warren was the master brewer last night at the Beacon Theatre who took the whole evening upon his shoulders and let his friends comfortably play their roles.  Thank you Warren for taking accountability for keeping the Allman Brothers Band strong and alive.  We all owe you.

I shook my ass and yelled from my seat.

Looking down from the edge of the left center balcony, I watched Eric Clapton rip Elizabeth Reed like I’ve never heard before (here is the clip).  My ears and musical senses felt like I did that first time.  My cherry was popped all over again.  I thought about a roller coaster ride, orgasmic sex and ether from the dentists chair.

I wept in joy.

One hell of an evening…thanks for the window of opportunity BD.

Here is an article from the NYT that gives all the gory details…including the Little Wing (click here) and then the loud and fast Layla encore (here is a bootleg video of the song).  By the way, they did place my favorite ABB tune…Ain’t Wasting No Time.
