I was reading through the Jimmy Buffett Scrapbook early this morning over coffee and loved reading about Jimmy’s early Key West days (early 70’s).

During this period he started writing songs about the local quirky local counterculture.  “Nautical Wheelers” is a good example… “Sonia’s just grinnin’ and Phil is estatic, and Mason just jumped in the sea.”..goes the song.

Well that “Phil” is Phil Clark from the Chart Room (see picture below), the muse for Buffett’s imortal song “A Pirate Looks at Forty”.  The song was on the 1974 “A1A” release and was the B-side to the “Present to Send You” single.

Everyone should make it to these old Buffett stomping grounds and have a chocolate milk at Fausto’s.

As a side note, I was reading my local Nyack magazine (The Nyack Villager) and loved the story “A Little Stroll with Sandy” by Neil Borodkin (here is full story) about his walk through town during the big storm, which ravished our town.

In the story Neil mentions OD’s — my favorite local wateringhole, which is complete with great burgers, meatloaf, pie and a killer jukebox — in way that reminds me of the Buffett hangouts during this influential time in Jimmy’s musical growth.

I always tell people that OD’s turns into the Star Wars Cantina late at night and is a an absolute ball and Thunderbird Ranch hotpot.

In Neil’s story he says…

“As the lights in OD’s flickered on and off repeatedly, the apparently inebriuated guy sitting next to me kept referecencing Star Trek and the Starship Enterprise and how its lights would always flciker whenevr it fired photon torpedoes.

I finished my brew.  Feeling well-medicated, I paid up, tipped well and headed to Main Street and up toward Franklin and finally back up 6th Avenue.

The walk seemed no less menacing than the walk into town.

Arriving safely at my place in one piece, I was relieved to have survived my adventure.”

Neil…I know how you feel.  That hill is a very tough on the thighs.  Thanks for sharing.

So if you don’t get to Key West, at least make it to OD’s for the Star Wars (Star Trek) scene.

Order a tequila and grapefruit and you will get a smile out of the bartenders.
