Music plays an important role in most great movies. There are also great movies about music.
There are countless lists on the
best music films… like this one from Timeout London, which lists some odd flicks I would never have thunk. One of my favorites is Pure Country. I love the interaction from the band and Straight by John Doe’s character Earl.
Landmark scenes that use music as a sensory tool like the spine tinging Jaws theme or Sixties flicks like Platoon or Apocalypse Now…they use music as a way to amplify an intense emotion the film creates for the viewer.

A music movie (as I have always called them) is now commonly known as a “Rockumentary” in the post VH-1 era. There are two types:
1. Straight concert videos like The Doors Live at Hollywood Bowl, Woodstock and Rust Never Sleeps.
2. Concerts mixed with creative sketches and brain ticklers that range from the extreme tickler The Wall to the more mixed The Last Waltz and Song Remains The Same — which includes those great personal profiles on each band member.

Another way music connects me with film is when a scene captures one of the intangible things about music that stimulates you. I was watching Wild Heart with Nic Cage and Laura Dern the other night and found myself jumping up and karate kicks in the air too…watch below.
Peace. Flap Your Wings.
