Jaco Pastorius

My hometown of Nyack, NY has some serious musical bones.  Most nights you can hear live music (usually very good live music) pouring from a half dozen barroom doors.

In my younger days, Cheers was a big live rock band music club…as well as Blondies (aka Saints and Scholars, Knuckleheads), which is now called Olive’s.  The days of seeing (and playing!!) music in Nyack are etched in my heart as the “good old days” for sure.

Talking with Bill Batson (a terrific local sketch artist that embodies the creative spirit entrenched in Nyack)…I learned about “The Office”. The Office (now the Old Village Inn) was the most well known and noted jazz club.

Here is a more complete article in “Nyack Views and News”.

I bought Batson’s picture (above) and found a pamphlet on the legendary jazz club…and this info:

The Office was one of Jaco Pastorious’ first appearances on the local jazz circuit after arriving from Florida.

An hour long unaccompanied performance at The Office in 1975 is the stuff of legend.  Unfortunately, Pastorious’(of Weather Report) life was tragically cut short in 1987 when he succumbed to years of drug abuse and mental illness.
