I enjoyed seeing Rodrigo y Gabriela at the super awesome Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY.
I don’t expect to ever see them again though.
I won’t buy a ticket or t-shirt, download a song or video, or go out of my way to see them at a festival. They weren’t that good.
The concept is great… metal meets traditional nylon-stringed Mexican music, played by a stunning man/women duo who earned their reputation playing the streets of Dublin (see video below), and scoring a top rated album.
When Rodrigo y Gabriela invited about 50 people from audience to come onstage the Capitol Theatre to help get the party going, my 5-star music aficionado piano playing showmate said to me very simply…
“That’s lame.”
Check out the guy below taking a selfie while Gabriela tries to lose herself in the song.

I also take it that at every show Gabriela puts on a tongue-in-cheek 4-minute guitar clinic on how she gets her sound.
When they did play songs though, it was fun (at times) kinda like seeing a good barroom duo band at my old favorite O’Ds in Nyack.
It’s too bad O’Donahue’s Tavern closed its doors this year.
Enjoy the ride Rodrigo y Gabriela, because unless you do something to evolve your act, the party will be over sooner than you’d like.
Kudos though for making it this. You deserve a ton of credit. You’ve gone where very few lounge acts ever make it too!
