Larry Campbell @ City Winery (Aug 2015)

I saw Larry Campbell and company play at City Winery.
He (along with his wife Teresa and Little Feat keyboard
player Bill Payne) entertained a
WFUV Marquee member crowd plus a few hundred
other paying fans at the lower west side NYC joint.
From my dead center perch w Mike B, I was thoroughly entertained.

Larry is a real
guitar god and was genius on Dylan’s
Time Out of Mind (one of my favorite album’s
of all time) and helped Levon Helm get the Ramble program organized and
continue it beyond his death. More on Larry’s career
here.
I saw Larry and his band at Mountain Jam and likened them to the Tedeschi Trucks husband and wife act. Their “Oh Atlanta”
woke up the mountain on Sunday morning.
Larry is also a Jorma guy and tonight pulled off a rousing version
of “Keep Your Lamps Trimmed and Burning” with his super talented wife screaming at the top of her lungs to match his Telecaster finger picking
licks.  This was the highlight of the show for me. This song is feature on Larry and Teresa’s new album.

Larry has that
off-beat rythem that Dylan likes, and was important to Robbie Robertson and Levon’s sound with The Band.
Although I (and many others in the highly educated music audience – yes Rita Houston and Matt Hudson nice to see you there) was
a bit leery of their “country set” (yes I was thankfully wrong), the Eric
Clapton/Derek and The Dominoes sound his night won me over fast.
Larry, et al knew how to turn up the intensity at the right
moments… the mark of a consummate pro in a small venue.  You can’t play at “11” the entire show and exhaust your audience.
Their Samson & Deliah take was excellent and got
the mellow crowd shuffling their ass cheeks in their seats.
During the show (which was filmed by WFUV), Larry
Campbell talked about meeting Bill Payne in 1973 at Max’s Kansas City when Bill played w Bonnie Raitt.  That story was genuine
and so cool for me to hear.
Female singers can learn a lot from Teresa who is a master at creating an energy ball that can ignite even a sitting crowd (I HATE THAT).
The band’s haunting version of Little Feat anthem
“Willin” was very memorable and perfect for the great acoustics at City Winery.
I met someone (who was visiting from Los Angeles) a few days later at Keen’s Steakhouse
bar and got talking about music (duh)… I mentioned the Larry Campbell
show… the response was “I listen to Garage Rock and City Winery is touristy and
a sham.”
They were wrong about City Winery… it’s a great venue
for the right band.

I defended it and NYC well.
As for Garage Rock… I will give it a whirl.
