On the day after David Bowie passed away, I was interested and thankful for the outpouring on social media by music fans.  It was social media at its best… connecting people through song and experiences music fans had with Bowie music as the backdrop.

Bowie is quite an interesting character and worth a deep dive.

Of the many great pieces, I like the one my friend Brad sent me from his friend at Vogue (click here).

I found out Bowie died by seeing this message below posted outside Hard Rock Cafe in Times Square.

In the spirit of old school TBR Rambles…I’ll ramble.

I’m so happy that Wes Anderson decided to use several of his songs in the Life Aquatic Steve Zissou.  His use of “Life on Mars” in the scene when Zissou discovers Ned (Owen Wilson) is his son is spectacular.

Bowie’s “Queen Bitch” also adds so much to the end of the opening scene when Zissou leaves the film festival with Klaus’ nephew on his shoulders and magical starfish in a champagne glass.

With this in mind, a light bulb went off while listening to Joe and Evan on WFAN sports radio today.

The caller started in quickly with …

“Joe, we have so much in common. Both in our 50s and fanatical about the Mets, Jets, Knicks and Islanders. We both know how to suffer.  None of our team are winners.  I’ve been suffering so long, it’s nice to know someone else tortures himself like I do. Suffering is in our DNA.”

Joe agreed and talked about how much pain the Jets loss to the Bills pained him.  He then said his suffering is now fueled by the Knicks.

Being a suffering fan sounds miserable to me and no way to go through life.

Creating a world in which you enjoy suffering and use it as a unifying identity is AWFUL. It’s likely symptomatic of someone who also hates their job and suffers through other daily situations (job, marriage, etc.) Why add to the misery?

Music on the other is almost always an uplifting and healthy escape from the pains of daily life.  Even the blues is uplifting  outlet for pain.

So I turned the dial and found some Wilco! “Pickled Ginger” for that matter.

If you’ve never heard it, the best way to listen to it is loud while you play air drums.

Being a music fanatic is healthier than being a suffering sports fanatic.

Flap your wings.

AND if you are going to be a fan, love your team and enjoy the victories.
