“Remember when you were young,
and shined liked the sun.”

“The sun is the same in a relative way, but you’re older.”

I’m not going to write about how Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour still rocks at 70 years old. (See Rolling Stone story. They did that better than I.)

I’m not going to write about how timeless Pink Floyd’s songs are and remain as relevant today as they ever did. (That’s obvious and boring.)

I’m also not going to write about how I still desperately miss Roger Waters when I see David Gilmour play, and visa a versa (see our story Roger’s Water’s The Wall @ Yankee Stadium.)

What I’d like to share is how cool is was that Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour played such a wonderful spattering of songs from his vast catalog.

The great Scott Harris caught David and his
Ray Bans during the crazy good “Run Like Hell”

When he announced the mini-tour last July, my Floyd buddy Ryan and I locked up tickets fast. The sold-out Madison Square Garden was a great venue for Mr. Gilmour and Company, which included the well-respected Phil Manzanaro from Rozy Music.

In order of importance…

The opening guitar riffs from “Sorrow” (the highlight of the show for me) had so much reverb that the organs (my liver, kidney, stomach, intestines and right lung) in my body were bouncing off my bones.  It’s rare that a Floyd tune could be better live than on the record, but his crisp vocals and rock’ em sock ’em guitar leads far surpassed the over-processed studio version on “Momentary Lapse of Reason”.

Keeping with that theme, the performance (music and light show) on the classic Wall song “Run Like Hell” was inspiring.  It was impressive to see that such a well known song can be dusted off in such a fresh way.  The band’s choice to all wear Ray Bans during the song added to the fun (see pic above). Talk about slowly building up drama in a song (not)… it’s 100 mph from start to finish. Pickled Ginger for sure.

Gilmour’s new “Lady in a Yellow Dress” was fantastic too.  I was glad they played the cheeky cartoon video that has been circulating online (click here for the video or below to view).

The not-so-well known “Fat Old Sun” from Atom Heart Mother was an unexpected surprise.  Glimmer’s mid-song change from acoustic to Stratocaster was entertaining. This has always been one of my favorite Gilmour penned songs.

The importance role of saxophones in Gilmour’s music also hit me as it was a featured part of songs old and new.

Although I love “Time”, the two song encore was a mail in.  Bummer… I was hoping for Echoes.

I actually left during “Comfortably Numb”… There is no need to join the sing along and cheapen the memory.

I ended up playing Echoes on full blast in the car with a big winsome smile all the way home.
