Chris Stapleton @ Pennysaver Amphitheater Brookhaven, NY (7-14-16) |
Chris Stapleton has been on tear the last few years and making quite a name for himself as one of those cross-over country rock guys that bring together the sounds of Allman Brothers, Charlie Daniels, Alan Jackson, etc….
Stapleton’s cover of the David Allan Coe/George Jones “Tennessee Whiskey” is terrific and his “Whiskey and You” contains one of the all-time classic country music lines…
“I drink because I’m lonesome, and am lonesome because I drink.”
He even got me and my buddies to drive to Long Island to watch his show. It took over 3.5 hours for a 62 miles drive during off-peak hours. Ugh!!
Stapleton’s music is great. He’s got balls, plays an evil country music style, has a great look and eve rocked a Tom Petty cover (“You Don’t Know How It Feels”) in high country shuffle style.
Unfortunately, he played less than 90 minutes to his sold out crowd at Brookhaven’s Pennysaver Amphitheater at Bald Hill.
That is not a typo. An 86 minute show.
When he said “Goodnight everyone” just before playing his hit “Fire Away”… the whole crowd looked at each other in disbelief. Even after the house lights came on people were still thinking it was a joke and he would return for 5 or 6 song encore set.
I mean it took 85 minutes to wait on the beer line, and this guy has the nerve to call it a night before 9:30?
While I am on a heated ramble roll…
Some brand names don’t lend itself to public signage. Seeing the Pennysaver name above the stage just made me think about how cheap the whole show left me feeling.
