I was laying on the beach listening to the waves while my a friend went to a few “to-go cup” Tequila and Grapefruits. I was thinking about what a wonderful trifecta of a day it was… going to see Widespread Panic at the fairly new Ford Amphitheater at the Coney Island Boardwalk.
This particular day was certainly a trifecta.
1. I love Panic live.
2. I love new music venues.
3. I love the beach.
As we walked towards the ocean from the subway station a few blocks away, I noticed the Widespread Panic Fans social scene begin to come to life. As always, mellow but steady and present, and always focused on the music. The Panic audience continues its “good” mix of fun and maturity.
The boardwalk and beach looked stark (like ready for winter) and clean. Unfortunately before long we were summoned from the water by a state park Marshall riding a 4-wheeler as fast as he could and wielding a megaphone. He quickly told us there were sharks in the water, and that the red flag means “don’t go in the water, stupid”.
I suggested he do something at the “widespread panic” being created on the boardwalk… he didn’t get or like the joke.
I then immediately starting singing Morphine’s “Sharks” and decided to enjoy the waves from shore.
As usual, Widespread Panic killed it.
Here is link to setlist.
The band’s song selection, sharp playing, enthusiasm and peak moments were stellar.
I really dug the solid old standby songs: Love Tractor, Space Wrangler, Hatfield, and Blue Indian (one of my favorites).
Widespread Panic kicks ass like no other rock band. There were several times the band got real dirty with heavy rock “The Other One” type jams. They never disappoint. Never.

The venue was surprisingly less crowded then I thought.
With our GA passes, we were easily able to walk right to the stage with no delay. There was a nice size crowd, and I think the smart layout inside the amphitheater is a big plus.
Panic’s extended touring of new venues in the NYC is always welcome and appreciated!
