I have a great posse, and am often asked to join friends to see live music. The Capitol Theatre is my most common destination. I was excited to see moe at the Brooklyn Bowl (my favorite venue) in a few weeks, but the shows were cancelled as the guitarist is ill. I hope Chuck Garvey feels better fast.
Thanks to the good planning and timing of Billy C. in Somers, Friday night (Nov. 19, 2021) I caught Jason Isbell and his band, The 400 Unit, at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY. Thanks Mike B for the Dylan invite, but I have been looking forward to seeing Isbell for some time. Coming fresh off his inspiring COVID lockdown virtual “Reunions” shows at The Ryman Auditorium, Isbell was sure to be at the top of his game.
Watching from my “spot-of-choice” stage-left front rail (the far right corner when you walk into the theatre…) I had the pleasure to witness Jason Isbell’s performance up close and personal.
That man can sing and play! Isbell has a tremendous sweet voice and is powerfully passionate when he sings. His strong conviction and striking confidence in his music, coupled with top-tier guitar playing, make Isbell a real “Five-Tool” talent… think Darryl Strawberry in his prime or Gary Clark these days (click here for that story).
Keeping with nutty comparisons, Jason Isbell approached this show like the leader of teenage motorcycle gang. Those bright red sneakers he wears are very appropriate as he was on fire all night. Even the slower songs have a haunting energy and powerful presence to keep my interest all night. Jason’s “Elephant” is a great song that makes you feel and taste the pain when you lose someone close.
Jason had plenty of rockers too… don’t forget he was kicked out of The Drive-By Truckers for drinking too much.
Think about that for a minute…
he must have drank a lot, a lot. DBT has flourished and now so has Jason Isbell…. all good. Please see my story and great photo of the two at Clearwater Music Festival in 2013 (click here for that)!!!
Dynamic songs like “Cover Me Up” were very impressive, filling most of the nights… and a great example of why we Music People (CLICK HERE FOR THE MUSIC PEOPLE PROJECT) keep going back for more!
