No April Fool’s on stage tonight (April 1, 2023), as Wilco showed its rock band muscle with a strong performance at the legendary Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY. The second of two sold-out shows, featured a hearty 23 songs (here is setlist). After a slow start (“Jesus, Etc” was a ho-hum mail in) the band warmed up and played a nice mix of classic rockers and sing-alongs (not my favorite, but when in Rome).

Jeff Tweedy’s voice was particularly sweet (he hit all the high notes) and seemingly fueled the band. Wilco’s multi layered sound and rich textures were on full display with the Cap’s best-in-class sound and acoustics.

NOTE: I have been to my share of sold out shows at The Cap, but never as jammed in as this. Luckily, we grabbed an obstructed spot on the railing just behind the soundboard.

Highlights included:

“Shot in the Arm” (one of my favorite Wilco’s tunes that shows off their punk spunk) in which keyboardist Pat Sansone let loose like I have never seen before. He whirled wildly across the keys like Yes’ Rick Wakeman… very entertaining!

“Impossible Germany” was great as usual with guitarist Nels Cline taking the spotlight. I appreciated his improvisational licks that freshened up the classic tune.

The surprising shining moment for me was “Laminated Cat” from one of Wilco side projects (Loose Fur) that had big giant balls. It reminded me of one of those swampy Doors tunes with drummer Glenn Kotche pounding the skins like a madman. The band’s version tonight was amped up and special.

“Hate It Here” off the 2007 Sky Blue Sky release always reminds me of a modern take on The Beatles. It is great tune for Wilco.

The last Wilco show I caught was in Martha’s Vineyard last summer (click here for that story).

I am looking forward to the next rock and roll album by Wilco!! Until then, see you on the front rail…
