A musician dressed in vibrant costume, resembling Jimi Hendrix, raises their hands in a peace gesture while standing on stage with bandmates, set against bright stage lights and audience silhouettes.

On the evening of April 4, 2025, the Emelin Theatre (website) in Mamaroneck, New York, was transformed into a vibrant homage to the late Jimi Hendrix. Guitar virtuoso Stanley Jordan (website) took the stage with his band, delivering a captivating performance titled “Stanley Jordan Plays Jimi.” This concert was more than a mere tribute; it was a reimagining of Hendrix’s music through Jordan’s unique lens.

I must admit, I was puzzled at first as the band was dressed up like it was Halloween. Jordan even had a Jimi-like wig on and knee-high suede hippie boots.

The drummer was in full costume too with a tie-dyed hat and pirate outfit. Aside from Wayne Coyne, it was the most weird concert I have ever seen. I was not prepared for the pomp and circumstance. Looking back, I am so glad I dragged Philly Dave across the (Hudson) River to witness the madness. Finding these type of intimate high-potential shows has become quite phun. Stanley’s power trio included Kenwood Dennard on drums and Wes Wirth (website) on bass were savage.

The setlist featured iconic Hendrix tracks such as “All Along the Watchtower,” “Hey Joe,” “Purple Haze,” “Voodoo Child,” and “Foxy Lady.” Jordan’s interpretation of these classics was infused with his signature touch technique, a style he pioneered that involves tapping the guitar strings with both hands, allowing for complex harmonies and melodies. This approach added a fresh dimension to the familiar songs, offering the audience a glimpse of what Hendrix’s music might sound like if he were still performing today.

Beyond the music, Jordan embodied Hendrix’s persona, not as a caricature, but as a sincere homage. This theatrical element enhanced the immersive experience, blurring the lines between performer and legend. The performance was a testament to Jordan’s deep connection to Hendrix, who inspired him to pick up the guitar at the age of 11. As Jordan explained, “This is my fantasy Jimi Hendrix concert if Jimi were still alive and playing today. By re-imagining his music and channeling his persona, I try to bring that fantasy to life.”

The Emelin Theatre, known for its intimate setting, provided the perfect backdrop for this tribute. The audience was treated to an evening that was both a celebration of Hendrix’s enduring influence and a showcase of Jordan’s innovative artistry. The performance was a poignant reminder of the timelessness of great music and the artists who continue to keep that legacy alive.
