When an old buddy (Crazy Jay F.) wrote me that one his favorite new artists, Lera Lynn (website), was playing at Le Poisson Rouge… I was immediately interested.
1. Jay knows his music (and so did his motley crew).
2. Le Poisson Rogue (website) is a great NYC venue.
3. Lera Lynn’s story is very interesting.
After being asked to record new tracks with producer T-Bone Burnett for HBO’s “True Detective”, the 31 year old Lynn was invited to be a recurring character on the series. To watch her in a scene from the show starring Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn, click here.

Lucky for me, I was able to catch up with Lera after the show.
With the voice like Sheryl Crow and style of Johnny Cash’s evil niece, Lera Lynn’s has released her third album, “Resister”. Her simple approach reminds me of Courtney Barnett, who is also taking the music world by storm. Take a listen to her song “Shape Shifter” (watch here).
There is a great deal of positive press on Lera. Two lines about her that stuck with me are:
1) Rolling Stone discussing her second release “Drive” (watch here) from Resister… she is “very vibey, very moody and very dark.” That is a lot of very.
2) Entertainment Weekly calls her character in True Detective the “hollow eyed bar singer”. (Note: when you see her in person, she is everything but hollow eyed.)
With her round brimmed black hat like Lee Van Cleef in Good Bad and the Ugly (see above), Lera Lynn put on a great show. She is unique and stylish, and a clever song writer. I love the line in “A Church in Ruins” that says “I love you like a miner loves gold.”
Here is some of the interview questions posed to Lera Lynn (LL) by Thunderbird Ranch Ramble (TbRR)…
